People with albinism have no melanin in their skin which makes them extremely sun sensitive and vulnerable to cancer. More than 95% of people with albinism in sub-Saharan Africa die from skin cancer before the age of 40. Advantage Africa is working with our partner the Source of the Nile Union of Persons with Albinism (SNUPA) in Busoga sub-region, Uganda, to help 400 people with albinism to protect themselves from the intense equatorial sun. This new project is quite literally life-saving. With SNUPA we are helping children and adults with albinism to understand their condition and to receive high SPF sun screen, hats, sunglasses and protective clothing. We are also working to raise awareness and dispel myths across the region so that people with albinism no longer face stigma and discrimination and can go to school, earn a living and be fully part of their communities.
